★ networks

computers can stand alone or connect to networks

network can be used for:

stand-alone computers have no internet access.

LAN: local area network, LANs operates on a single site such as a school, hotel or business using their own cabling system. (example: your school network).

WAN: wide area network, 2 or more LANs connected to form one network where each networks are a large distance apart (example: the internet).

leased lines are usually rented from phone companies.

hardware is needed to connect a computer to a LAN, for example a NIC (network interface card/controller) is needed in the computer to access networks, and routers and switches provides access to a LAN.

network speeds are measured in megabits per second.

router

a router looks at the destination of packets of data and sends them to the network that is closer towards their destination.

a home router will route packets between the home LAN and the internet.

routers can be wired or wi-fi.
